Riley the Kicker (4 months)

Time flies when your baby is growing up. Almost 20 weeks on this planet and already you’ve carved a place in the world. You are definitely YOU and no other baby is comparable.

Kicking seems to bring you lots of joy. When I change your nappy I give you a little massage, a tummy rub, slide my hands down your sides when you love to wriggle around kicking your legs straight against my tummy, pushing your little body forwards. You giggle and laugh, and it’s infectious.

Last Wednesday you were 6.3kg, measuring about 62cm long. I expect you to be about 6.5kg now, and noticeably chubbier than a month ago. Overall developing healthy and well. I’ve started supplementing with about 200mL of formula a day, usually in the evening and night hours to help you settle and sleep a bit longer. Exclusive breastfeeding wasn’t quite enough for you to keep growing strong. I’m happy we’ve made the decision to mix feed.

You are babbling lots and curious about new faces but comfortable being held by all your aunties and uncles. You do seek out my and your dad’s face in the crowds, ensuring we’re near and drawing your confidence from us (I think).

Yesterday we met Jayden, Jody’s baby who is 2 months younger. You guys enjoyed some tummy time together and cooed and yelled at each other across the spread of toys. It was fun 🙂 Saturday was a picnic with the Jerks group. Zach, Lyla, Luka, Jess and Tommy were all there. Lots of photos of the babies together.

Lately you are following things with your eyes more. I got a little plastic car with windup wheels and you love to watch it zip across the playmat. Red dog still get lots of drool on his nose, and plastic links are still a fav to wrap your little hands around.

Speaking of your hands, you do love exerting your will over the bottle! You hold on to my fingers with both your hands as I hold the bottle for you. You’ll direct the movement of my hands by pulling them towards you or away when you want to take a breather from drinking. And you’ll tilt your head back and wriggle your bum down to get into a more inclined position towards the end of the bottle so you get maximum flow. Clever little man!

Your dad loves to call you the “Rylster” (although I like to spell it “Rilster”). He takes you in the mornings after the 6/7am feed to give me a little sleep in. During this time I hear him calling you Rilster over and over while smiling at you, loving it when you smile back. This lasts for maybe 15-20 mins until you’ve had enough of it and starts crying. I’m sure he’ll work out other games to play with you soon.

Very soon I feel you’ll be sitting up! At the moment I can plonk you down on your butt and you are able to balance there while leaning forwards. A bit more practice with your abs and butt hopefully you’ll be sitting upright, that would be fun. Then we can start solids!

Speaking of food. There’s a great photo of you reaching out for a pint of beer! Your first inclination for food, and it’s beer. Ha!

That’s all for now. Smooches.
