Jett the Imitator @ 16 months

You are just so funny you are saying “tanku” and “shoooes”, you love your shoes.! You also nod your head for ‘yes’ and shake for ‘no’, particularly when it comes to eating your meals; when you are done it is definitely done and you shake your head adamantly.

I think it’s unusual for babies to learn to nod the head for yes at the same time as shake their head for now. Riley was shaking his head for no for a long time before he worked out nodding for yes.
I think you understand so much of what we say and do ask of you, but you haven’t quite found the motivation to say it yet. When I say nappy time you know what that means. When I say dindins you know what that means.
Or, “wheres your hat?”, “where’s your bee bag?”, “books”. You also say “nana” and point at the fruit bowl whenever you’re hungry. Haven’t got the words for crackers yet, but you certainly do know strawberries and blackberries.

You’re also very expressive with your body language. If you want to climb up on something, or want a hug, you let me know with grunts, eye contact and arm waving. If I give you a biscuit you might insist on climbing into your highchair before you eat it. I think you are a tidy and organised little girl and you like things to be predictable and routine.

One of the things I love about the words you say is you called your father. You call him “daddu”. Last night you woke up at about 1 am and you were saying over and over again “ere daddu, ere daddu”. When I got in your room you were alert and unhappy, you immediately got up and stood in your bed for me to pick you up. I took you in my arms and I tried to comfort you but you didn’t want it. You also pointed at the curtains and just yelled and cried. Eventually dad came up and you went to him, it seemed you really wanted him. I went back to bed and dad looked after you for a bit. He said you were trying to eat the sudocrem container so he got you a bottle, you drank it all and went back to sleep till past 9 am today.

I’m noticing some interesting competitions between you and your brother. You love watching him play and run and jump and be very noisy. And you love to play whatever game he’s playing. You’ll take the trains he’s carefully shunted together, or steal a piece of road when he’s not looking. He gets pretty annoyed about that and usually snatches it out of your hands. While you find your brother is entertaining from afar, you sometimes get a little annoyed and anxious when he comes near you. Sometimes you love to play with him rolling around on the ground tumbling climbing on the furniture. Sometimes you just want him to leave you alone specially when you’re feeling a bit grumpy.
 Interesting sibling dynamics.

There’s no denying how much you learn from Riley; whether it’s using the spoon, riding the scooter (you’re managing to stand up on it and even push off with a foot and move forward a little), riding the little tricycle motorbike, or read books.
