Riley’s first day at childcare

So he’s a big boy now. Sunday was his first birthday party, and Monday was his first day of childcare. I dropped him off quiet place in the morning around 9:15 because we had both slept in till about 630 in the morning. I guess we were both tired from a big day at the park yesterday. Michael had stayed up in Sydney for his work on Monday and I drove Riley and Toby down Sunday afternoon.

We went to KU Moss Vale and when walked in everyone was friendly and smiling. I meant Rileys carers in the baby room, Nikita and shell. There were about six are the babies in the baby room; one little girl was 10 months old but the others were older and able to walk. They had a little dining area with the little table, the other kids were starting a colouring exercise when I got there. The babies also had a play area in doors which lead to an outdoor play area with the sandpit. There was also a nap room maybe 10 or 12 cots in there.
I put Riley down, he crawled and was happy to explore. There was another baby that was crying very loudly, but really didn’t seem to upset by that. I stayed in the baby’s room for maybe half an hour talking to Chelle about his routine a time for practices and working out where to put his bottle and hat bag and nappies etc. Then I spent half an hour in the admin office with Lorraine trying to sort out his childcare subsidy.

I didn’t check on Riley before I left because I’m sure he was fine. He’s just that kind of kid that is comfortable and comps for denting every situation, happy around strangers, welcoming to other kids. I had no doubt he would to make friends and charm people very quickly.
When I got home I worked alone with Toby around for the rest of the day. It was a little bit hard to adjust to actually!

There was a phone call from childcare centre this afternoon, apparently he had done a couple of runny poos and had thrown up. But otherwise he was perfectly happy and getting along with everyone and really enjoy himself. Michael and I had a quick chat and we think it’s because of the cake and sausages from the day before. Not stuff he is used to having.
I had another call from childcare centre about 4:15 from Nikita. She wanted to know if she should put him down for a nap, or since I was going to pick him up before five whether it she just pulled off. I was all happy for her to put him down for a nap.
I went to pick them up a bit after five and he was there you there were only two of the kids left at about 530. He was pretty happy playing with the dolly and rushing a baby bed. He didn’t notice me for ages I was standing there watching him, wanting to see his reaction when he sees me. I had to get quite close to him and called him a few times for he looked at me and recognised me. Then he gave a little cry with Simon and speedy crawled all the way to me. And I picked him up and I hugged him and it was such a lovely reunion.

Although he did not have a huge amount of sleep at childcare (only a one hour nap in the morning) he didn’t seem very tired when he got home. I kept him up, gave him dinner, then we walked Toby, had bath, milk and then eventually sleep at about 8:45pm. He was very tired then, pretty much dozed off in my arm as soon as he finished his bottle.

I did notice that afternoon how different he seemed; more stimulated, more courageous, more open. He was climbing all of the couch and really wanted to jump down from there on his own but he was going headfirst and hit his head on the soft padded floor a couple of times. He also was interested in trying the other parts of the obstacle course I set up for him at the wedge pillow ramp onto the cushions and then over to the couch.
With his eating, I also noticed he was better at feeding him, seemed quite happy to pick up food with his fingers and put it in his mouth.
